When I was growing up in the 1980s, the only option out there for artificial nails at home were Lee press-on nails. (If you know, you know).

Each package came with Lee’s special adhesive tabs, which were essentially stickers that you put on your natural nails and pressed the fake nail on top of. And trust me when I tell you these things did NOT stay on. At all.

What are Press-On Nails?

Press-on nails are different than the nail stickers I mentioned above. Unlike nail stickers (essentially polish strips for your natural nail), press on nails are artificial nails that you adhere to your natural nail using a glue or adhesive. They often come in a variety of lengths and shapes. Some of the most popular shapes available include:

How Do You Apply Press-On Nails?

Press-on nails can be applied easily at home using either a glue or other adhesive. In our experience, the options that use an adhesive tab do not last nearly as long as the glue ones, so keep that in mind when looking at the different brands.

Most press on nail kits have multiple widths in each set, allowing you to pick the one that most closely aligns to your natural nail size. When trying to figure out the best nail size for you, make sure the artificial nail is not so big that it goes past your natural nail bed. Alternatively make sure it’s not so small that you can see your natural nail.

• Remove any old polish or glue and gently buff your nail bed.
• File/trim your natural nails as short as possible.
• Gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle or orange stick.
• Wipe your nail clean with an alcohol or included prep pad.
• Have the nails you’re going to apply ready in the order they go on. Start with your non-dominate hand first.
• If using a glue, apply it to the back of the artificial nail and your nail bed.
• Place the artificial nail onto your own, and starting at cuticle press down on the nail firmly for 10-30 seconds.
• Wipe off any glue or adhesive that gets on your skin as soon as possible.

How to Remove Press On Nails

Press on nails should be easy to remove if you’re using a high-quality glue. For instance, the glue used on Static Nails is designed to wear off over time, so when you are ready to remove you simply soak your nail in hot water for a few minutes to soften, then gently lift the nail from each side to “pop” them off.

You can use a backup artificial nail or orange stick to gently lift the nail from the side (Marmalade nails even has their own removal tool to help with the process), however you never want to pull a nail off as you could cause some minor damage to your natural nail. Whatever you do, try to avoid ever soaking your nails in acetone to remove them. This will majorly dry out your nails and potentially ruin the finish on your artificial nails if you plan on reusing them. You can, however, use a swipe of acetone on your natural nail bed to remove any excess glue that is left behind after removal.

If you’re looking for a quick manicure that you can do on the go (or just want to change up your manicure frequently), imPress nails are a good, inexpensive option. Because they use a sticker adhesive vs. glue, they’re not going to last as long as other names on this list, however with good care you could get up to 7 days with a set.

imPress is also one of the few options that offers press on nails for your toes as well. Because these also use adhesives, they recommend wearing open-toe shoes, sandals with them. (I don’t think jogging in press on nails would be fun! LOL).
